Classroom Pets for Children with Autism |
| Researchers at the University of Queensland have started an exciting new program to provide classroom pets for children with autism. Last year, 31 classrooms in Brisbane participated, and the feedback was so positive that it is continuing next year! |

The program consists of an adorable pair of guinea pigs (including their cage, food, and bedding) provided 100% free to the classroom for 8 weeks. During this time, a facilitator visits the classroom twice a week to work with small groups of students to learn how to care for, interact with, and understand the needs and communication of the animals. It provides a fun and engaging opportunity for children with autism to interact with their classmates over a common interest and activity, and for all students to practice empathy and compassion for another creature and each other. |
